Christmas Dinner 2011
Another joyous Christmas dinner has come to a close! Of course, the best part was the "12 Days of Christmas!" Traditions here mean so much to not only the students but also the faculty and staff! Each year they serve our students dinner as they gear up for exams and enjoy the days before break together with friends, before heading home for the winter break.

December first has come and gone, officially! Today has been the day (in a good way!)! Applications, letters of recommendation, transcripts...you name it and we have seen it! We're so excited to get the first batch of application prepared for revision by the Admissions Committee! As you can imagine, our team has been quite busy- but, it surely has been rewarding!
After meeting all of our prospective at high school visits, college fairs and building relationships with each and everyone of them, it just means thatmuch more to be able to see their applications come in the door and to get them ready for the committee review!
The good news, those that have applied by today, you will be getting you decision around Christmas!
For now, it is "over and out" ladies and gents- until tomorrow!

December 1st is right around the corner!
Can you believe it? In less than a month, we will be in December? Starbucks has their holiday cups out, the mall is starting the process of hanging the Christmas decorations, but wait a second...Thanksgiving has not even passed yet!
Before you get wrapped up in the Holiday cheer, (which we hope you do!) make sure you submit all of your college applications. Why? It is just one more thing that you can be thankful for as you sit around the dinner table and eat your Thanksgiving meal!
Notre Dame of Maryland University hold a December 1st deadline for the maximum scholarship consideration. Are you looking to have the most consideration for free money? If yes, then make sure to apply by December 1st!

Friday is Get Acquainted Day on campus! Stephanie Cavill, our Campus Visit Coordinator, has been preparing endlessly so that the event will be fantastic- as they all are! But we want to ask you, do you think that it is important to visit the campuses of those schools your considering applying/attending for your next academic year?
On a side note:
Who has completed the application?! We know what you're thinking, "But wait, it isn't even November yet!" Be sure you have Notre Dame entered in College Board so that we receive your SAT scores. And remember, it's never too early to apply! The earlier the better! Be thankful when you're with your friends and family for thanksgiving that you have completed your college applications!
Be sure to have submitted your request for your official transcripts. Yes, these have to come from your Guidance Office and must be sealed.
Have you written your first draft of your essay? Have the first outline drafted? Have a parent or friend-- or both read over it and give you their feedback! Be sure to write about something you feel passionate about!
Mark your calendars!
-Our next visit opportunity, after this Friday the 21st (which is Get Acquainted Day) is November 17th -18th, Preview Overnight!! We allow all prospective senior students to spend the night on campus! Attend classes, meet professors, hang out with current students and really experience what life is like as a Notre Dame Woman!

Anyone can play! Every Tuesday from 4:30-6:00 on Doyle Lawn!
The leaves have already started to change color here on campus! Notre Dame is always beautiful but especially in the fall when covered in a soft brush of rich red, orange and yellow leaves!

Helpful hints for the application process
The fall means one things for high school seniors, its time to start submitting those college applications. When sitting-in on informational sessions and trying to learn more about the process, more often than not, a student can become even more confused before they have even opened up a college application! Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind as you're working on your application.
#1 Break the application down into pieces, take it piece by piece!
"Inch by inch, life is a sinch. Yard by yard, life is hard."
Applications aren't meant to be tricky or to fool those who are applying. Rather, they gathering as much information about future students as possible. So, before you feel as though the weight of the world resting on your shoulders, buckle down- take it step by step. Chances are it will be easier than you thought! And, should questions arise as you're filling out your application you have many different resources you can consult to find the answer-- talk to your Guidance Counselor, contact your Admissions Counselor, ask a friend who has been through the process before, just be sure to ask if you're unsure!
#2 Follow the three C's when filling out an application : Clarity, Consistency, Correctness.

- Clarity - Be sure to write clear, list all information clearly so the reader will not have to guess if your "r" is a "v" ....or if your "e" is an "i"....alright, you get the idea...
- If your handwriting is not perhaps your "strongest talent", think about submitting a online application, where you can type all information
- Consistency: Spell your name the same on every document, it is strongly suggested to write your name as it appears on your state issued I.D.
- Please refrain from using nicknames, this increases the likelihood that your application pieces will not be married together should they be sent at different times
- Correctness: Verify that all information is correct. Yes, this means reading, and re-reading your application before submitting it.
- Trust us, it will pay off for you! It might even help to have a friend or family member also glance over your application.

It's Time to Hit the Books!

Who ever said studying can't be fun, hasn't hit the books with these two ladies! Of course, they'll also be the first ones to tell you, there is a time to be serious and focus on studies as well! Miss Chandler and Miss Colleen are two of the members partaking this year in the inaugural class of Nursing in the Women's College, at Notre Dame of Maryland University! We are super excited to now offer this program at an undergraduate level, and equally excited to have such a wonderful inaugural class to bring the program to life!
How can you apply to the BSN Program?
- Students wishing to apply for the BSN program should obtain the general application for the University.
- Our entry-level, four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing is for non-nurses who wish to study in the Women's College. Students who are accepted into pre-nursing take general education and science courses in their first and second years. During the second year, students apply to become nursing majors and study in the School of Nursing, Women's College division during their junior and senior years.

When a Test Becomes More Than “Just a Test”
After a few days on
the road one question has been asked over and over again by students about the
application process: “What about the SAT?” With this question comes a look of
fear and apprehension that this one particular test is a student’s end all and be
all when it boils down to the final admissions decision. We want to address
this topic and ease some fears about the dreaded letters: S-A-T.
While the SAT’s are a big part of a student’s
college application, SAT scores are not always the deciding factor in
determining a yes or no decision from a college. The SAT’s are just part of a whole application which go into making a decision for acceptance.
Each school sets a standards, “minimum score needed for acceptance”, “average
score”, and “scholarship consideration.” These words alone have caused many a
sleepless nights for students and studying endless (this is known from personal
experience not too many years ago).
The best piece of advice that we can
give to students preparing to take the SAT this fall is simple: prepare. There
is no magic trick to doing well on the test, it is the simple preparation of
knowing what you are getting into before the morning (or night before) the
test. The best way to prepare for this test is to read some SAT prep books,
take practice tests, and look into any classes that may be offered at your
school. The more familiar you are with the test, the more you will feel
prepared and know what is ahead of you the Saturday morning when you go to take
the test.
At Notre Dame, we recommend that
students take the test between two and three times. We accept the highest
combined score of any day taken. For example, if you do really well in verbal
on the October test and better on Math on the November test we will combine
those tests for the highest combined score.
When looking to apply to colleges,
the most important number to look at is the average test score of accepted
students. This number takes a look at all the scores that were submitted for
students who were accepted and where the majority of those scores are. You can
see where your scores range compared to most students who were accepted.
Another important piece of advice is to be in contact with your admissions
counselor throughout the process. Ask them what kind of scores they are looking
for and let them know about your plans to take future tests.
Don’t let the stress of the SAT’s
keep you from enjoying your senior year and tackling the college application
process. The more you know about the test and what the schools you are applying
to are looking for, the better off you will be on test day and that will
relieve a lot of anxiety and stress.
*** Remember that the late
deadline for the October 1st SAT’s is coming up on September 21st.
You can also sign up regular deadline for the November 5th test by
October 7th. Also, make sure to add Notre Dame to your list of
schools to receive your scores before test day!***

We even received a proclamation from Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake deeming
September 9th forever, "Notre Dame of Maryland University Day" in Baltimore!

For some, the answer might be quick and simple! "Oh, I'll being going to ________ (fill in your favorite institution)". But for others, the options of 4,000 different colleges in the United States can seem overwhelming and just too much to even start to dive into!
That is why we have started this blog! We hope to answer all the questions that come along with the college application and selection process, so that you feel educated and secure in your decision of where to call home for the next four years!
College is the time to grow, to become educated, to make memories and to evolve. Why not have someone to go down that path with you? We can help assist on the pathway leading up to college, and of course the rest, as they say "is history."

Orientation Week- Day of Service!
First year students take part in a day of service, during one of our orientation days in the beginning of the semester. Volunteering service to our surrounding community is a large part of the Notre Dame mission and a great way to bond with your new college friends!

First Week of Classes
The first week of classes here at NDMU is coming to an end! Can you believe it!? If feels like yesterday we were just sitting in the Convention Center for graduation! In light of the the hurricane Irene, many high schools in the area are back in the swing of things and school has resumed as normal. But, there are a just a few schools without power-- hang in there folks, we're thinking of you!
For now our staff is working hard to plan our "travel agendas" for the upcoming fall! We are looking forward to hitting the roads and meeting some great high school students at college fairs, high school visits, and of course- our lovely coffee nights! We will be certainly busy traveling, but never too busy to meet you and learn about what you want our of your college education! Whether you would like to visit campus or have a one-on-one meeting at your high school, we will be there for you to help answer your questions!

Check out a photo from one of our newest traditions, the Book Signing Ceremony! All undergraduate students sign their name into the student registry, together upon the conclusion of the opening luncheon. The Class of 2015 is the first to partake in this tradition which will now be adopted into the traditions of Notre Dame of Maryland University.
